Winter Preparedness
As temperatures cool and winter settle into our region, it’s easy to assume wildfire risks are behind us. However, in our area, the threat of wildfire doesn’t go away with the changing seasons. This year, the summer rain we enjoyed allowed the vegetation in our community to grow. While the greenery was a welcome sight during the warmer months, this vegetation has now dried out, creating significant fuel for wildfires.
The combination of dry grasses and winter winds can quickly transform a single spark into a fast-moving wildfire. That’s why we must remain vigilant and proactive in reducing wildfire risks in our community.
Wildfire Preparedness
- Clear Your Property: Take time to remove dead leaves, dry vegetation, and other flammable debris from around your home.
- Maintain Defensible Space: Trim trees and bushes to ensure at least 10 feet of clearance between branches and your home or outbuildings.
- Be Cautious with Fire: Avoid outdoor burning on windy days and continue to pay attention to the Travis County Burn Ban.
Winter’s arrival also brings the first freeze, which poses its own set of challenges. Preparing for cold snaps is crucial to protect your home and ensure your family’s safety.
Preparing for the First Freeze
- Protect Your Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes and let faucets drip during freezing temperatures to prevent bursting.
- Check Heating Systems: Have your furnace or heaters serviced and ensure that fireplaces or wood stoves are clean and safe for use.
- Be Cautious with Space Heaters: Place them on level, non-flammable surfaces and keep them at least three feet away from curtains, furniture, or bedding.
- Plan for Power Outages: Keep flashlights, extra blankets, and a supply of non-perishable food on hand in case severe weather impacts electricity.
While it’s tempting to embrace the season with less worry, I believe preparation is the key to keeping our community safe. At the Pedernales Fire Department, we take great pride in serving and protecting you through every season.
