Pedernales Firefighter Training Requirements
We recently discussed with Battalion Chief Montgomery the training necessary to be a member of the Pedernales Fire Department and here are his comments.
“Firefighters at the Pedernales Fire Department undergo extensive training to ensure they are prepared for the diverse challenges of emergency response. Each firefighter is required to be a TCFP-commissioned Firefighter (Texas Commission on Fire Protection), hold a minimum EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician Basic) certification through the TDSHS (Texas Department of State Health Servies), and maintain a valid Texas Class B driver’s license. Training emphasizes not only fire suppression tactics but also rescue and extrication techniques, hazardous materials response, and emergency medical services. Firefighters are equipped with working knowledge of fire and medical equipment, including SCBAs (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus, known as airpacks), extrication tools, and ladder operations, while also being proficient in water, high angle, wilderness and vehicle rescue. Beyond technical proficiency, our firefighters are trained in department policies, the Incident Command System, and district geography, allowing for efficient and informed decision-making during incidents. Physical endurance, adaptability under stress, and the ability to communicate professionally—both verbally and in writing—are essential components of our training. Through a strong commitment to continuous education and adherence to the Pedernales Fire Department’s Standard Operating Guidelines, our firefighters maintain the highest level of professionalism, safety, and service to the community.”
The Pedernales Fire Department does plan on conducting a hiring process for full-time employees in the near future. Position openings will be advertised via social media as well as on local job boards and the Job Postings page on TCFP’s website. PFD will likely be looking for candidates who currently possess a current paramedic certification through the Texas Department of State and Health Services and preferably their Basic Firefighter certification through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
For information on obtaining these certifications inquire through the PFD website, https://tcesd8.org/administration/recruitment/.
