In 1981, a small group of Travis County deputies took it upon themselves to brighten the holidays for 25 families in unincorporated areas of the county. With no outside funding, these deputies reached into their own pockets to create what we now know as the Brown Santa program. Over the decades, this grassroots effort has grown exponentially, now serving around 2,000 families each year, including underprivileged children, their families, and senior residents in local retirement centers.
The name “Brown Santa” reflects the brown uniforms worn by the sheriff’s department, but the spirit of the program lies in the community’s generosity. Each year, it brings joy to those who might otherwise go without during the holiday season.
This year, Brown Santa is seeking donations of unwrapped gifts to make the holidays special for children, teens, and seniors. Suggested items include:
- Ages 10 and Up: Puzzles (500–1000 pieces), inexpensive earbuds
- Girls: Makeup sets, curling/flat irons, volleyballs, books, hair accessories
- Boys: Footballs, basketballs, board games, electronics
- Younger Children: Toys, dolls, books, puzzles
- Seniors: Nightgowns, trinkets, history books, and thoughtful gifts
Donated items can be dropped off in bins located at any Pedernales Fire Department Station, McCoy’s Building Center, or Angel’s Icehouse in Spicewood through December 12th.
You can also support Brown Santa through Venmo, PayPal, or their Amazon Wish List. Visit brownsanta.org or call 512-247-2682 to learn more about donations, volunteer opportunities, and upcoming events. Together, we can continue the legacy of kindness that started with just a few deputies over 40 years ago.
Austin Police Department started a similar toy and food drive in the early 70s called “Blue Santa” in reference to the police uniforms. See the heartwarming interview with Ret. APD Lt. Ernie Hinkle, founder of Austin Police Operation Blue Santa at https://www.bluesanta.org/about
